Return of writ Writ |
| Reference: | C 269/5/19 |
| Summary: | Writ of certiorari requesting details of men admitted, instituted and inducted into the church of Houghton le Spring since the time of Bishop Bek. Return, dated at Bishop Auckland, 18 November 1371, states that Bek died on 5 March 1311, when Malo Lacu held the church, and he held it all through Bishop Kellawe's time, and died during the next vacancy, when Bishop-elect Beaumont confirmed it to Vale at Riccall on 14 August 1317. Vale moved to Maidstone, and Beaumont confirmed Hessewell at Welbourn on 18 December 1326, but on 20 November 1327, at Pontefract, the king presented Marmyon, and the dispute was decided in Marmyon's favour on 24 December 1328. Marmyon held it through Bury's time, and on 12 March 1346, at Auckland, Dalton was admitted on the king's orders. On Dalton's death, it was given to Henle on 1 July 1371 (at Wheel Hall), and he still holds it. |
| Note: |
Bek's date of death is generally given as 3 March 1311, but document clearly says 5 March. The chronology does not correspond entirely with the generally-accepted details. |
