| Summary: | Return by Archbishop Melton to Richard de Wilughby [Willoughby] and his associates, justices of assize in Nottinghamshire, of two writs, dated at Nottingham, 26 May 1328, and witnessed by Willoughby, ordering him to inquire into the bastardy of John and William, sons of John de Oscynton [Ossington], who arraigned an assize of mort d'ancestor against Richard de Sutton of Walesby and Margery, his wife, concerning a messuage and a bovate of land in Kirton (Kirketon iuxta Walesby), but which they challenged on the grounds of his alleged bastardy, that the court found John and William to be illegitimate and born to the extra-marital relationship between John senior and Margaret Hernoz. |
