| Summary: | Order to Seton to return to Chancery the process of a case before him as justice of gaol delivery, regarding the death of Fynche on 30 June 1355. Copy of process attached, held in York on 24 February 1356. The jury stated that Cawod was a clerk of the summoner of Selby and cited Fynche to appear before the official of Selby for committing fornication with various women in the town. Fynche was angry and confronted Cawod in the abbey kitchen, drew a knife and hit him, and chased him around the table. When he couldn't escape, Cawod drew his own knife and struck Fynche in the chest, killing him. Cawod claimed self-defence, and the jury agreed. Cawod was returned to the sheriff's custody to await the king's grace. |

| Summary: | Request that the king order the sheriff of Lancashire to restore to Birewath the lands and chattels taken into the king's hands after Birewath was accused before Foljambe and other justices that he and Hacunshawe killed Clerc at Fulwood in Preston on 19 January 1369, and stole 33s 4d and the seal of the king's merchants then in Clerc's possession; and that they killed Geoffrey de Langton at Preston in Amounderness on 30 November 1368; and that Birewath and others stole a cow and other chattels worth 10s from Robert de Ridding at Preston on 8 August 1356; and that Birewath is a notorious thief; and that Birewath and other felons broke into the church at Preston on 6 December 1361 and stole 100s of silver in money in a chest in the chancel; that he and other felons broke into the room of Henry de Preston, chaplain, at Preston on 1 October 1364 and stole 10 marks in money and Henry's mazer worth 6s 8d. Birewath was transferred to ecclesiastical custody and purged himself in York Minster before the archbishop's commissaries on 10 June 1371, according to church custom. |
