| Summary: | Writ of certiorari ordering Archbishop Thoresby to return details of an inquisition concerning a vacancy in the prebend of Monkton in the collegiate church of Ripon, which the king has given to Lynton. Response recites an inquisition, held in Ripon on 10 April 1372, under an order from Thoresby of 31 March 1372, stating that Bonde was the last person to obtain the prebend, as far as they knew. The prebend had fallen vacant during the vacancy after the death of Archbishop Corbridge, on the death of Audenard. Bonde holds the prebend legitimately. Witnesses named, six being vicars choral and chaplains of Ripon, six being townsmen. |
| Language: | Latin |
| Note: | Seemingly part of a long-running dispute over the prebend, which continued into Archbishop Neville's time. BIA, Register 11, fol. 76r; Register 12, fol. 1v. Bonde did not actually acquire the prebend, as he lost a suit at the papal curia to Adam Thornton. Register 11, fol. 76r. 'Egidius de la Garderoba, alias Audenardo' was prebendary from 1283. Fowler, Memorials of Ripon, vol. ii. Lynton, noted as having been appointed by the king during another vacancy (presumably the one between Zouche and Thoresby), does not appear in Fowler's list. |
