Summary: Letter containing various pieces of news. Report of money due to the recipient at Candlemas from Catton, Aughton, Alne and Acomb. Tollerton is unable to sell wool and stock due to the fear of war. The writer has spoken to the chancellor and the prior of Ellerton concerning the church of Aughton, and John [de Catton] will take the church of Catton provided the writer is his co-parcener. The king came to York 'this Thursday', and is staying at the palace, and the recipient's houses have been taken over by 'the earl'. The bishop of Chester, the earl of Cornwall, Beaumont and FitzWilliam came with the king, and are staying until Easter. The bishop of Chester has been sworn as Treasurer. On Sunday the king called together the knights of Yorkshire, and said that everything done in London was done against his will and he has revoked it. The king has given Cottingham church to Hothum, with whom he dined on his first night in York.

Note: The recipient can be identified as Walter Bedwyn, who held the rectories of Aughton and Catton, as well as the manor of Alne and the peculiar of Acomb as Treasurer of York. For a similar letter to Bedwyn from 1309, possibly from the same person, see C 47/22/10/6. Sender unknown. Dated by Maddicott, and by J.R.S. Phillips (Edward II (London, 2010)) to late-January 1312.

Summary: Archbishop Melton seeks remedy, stating that although custody of the spiritualities of the bishopric of Carlisle belong to him during a vacancy, during the last vacancy the king's ministers, especially Barton, took tithes of wool and lambs, mortuary gifts, offerings, pensions, revenues and other spiritual rights from the churches of Penrith and Dalston. The fact that Edward I's ministers took tithes of wool and lambs from Penrith during the previous vacancy should not be taken as precedent. Reply that Barton is to inform the Chancery why he took these things.

Note: Supposedly one of various petitions dating from 18 Edward II. It must date from after 20 June 1325, when Barton was ordered to deliver the temporalities to the new bishop, John de Ros (CPR 1324-7, p. 132), although he had previously been ordered to deliver them to William de Ayremynne, whose election was later quashed, on February 19 1325 (CPR 1324-7, p.92). The previous bishop, John Halton, died on 1 November 1324.
