Summary: Certification from Archbishop Neville, in response to a royal writ of 28 September 1384 (recited), stating that convocation met in York on 11 January 1385 and, after three days of deliberations, granted the king one tenth, payable at Pentecost and St Peter ad Vincula next. Exemptions included benefices and temporalities in Northumberland, Cumberland and Copeland devastated by Scottish incursions and English armies, Egglestone Abbey, whose goods had been burnt in a fire, and all Cluniac, Benedictine and Augustinian nuns, on account of their poverty. This was all on condition that the cost of repairing any damages done by the Scots in the meantime should be deducted from the tax. Further writs arrived on 15 January and 24 February 1385 (not recited), and convocation met again on Friday 21 April 1385, and granted another half a tenth, with the same exceptions, on condition that the king lead an army against the French or Scots before Martinmas next. The tax was payable within two months of such a campaign, and the collectors were the abbots of Kirkstall and Jervaulx, and the priors of Watton, Newburgh and Lenton.
