Summary: Writ (dated at York, 12 August 1314) and inquisition into the alienation in mortmain by Archbishop Greenfield, with the assent of the chapter of York, of messuages, land and rents in Ripon and Dole to a chaplain in the chapel in his manor of Ripon. Summary: Archbishop Melton seeks remedy, stating that although custody of the spiritualities of the bishopric of Carlisle belong to him during a vacancy, during the last vacancy the king's ministers, especially Barton, took tithes of wool and lambs, mortuary gifts, offerings, pensions, revenues and other spiritual rights from the churches of Penrith and Dalston. The fact that Edward I's ministers took tithes of wool and lambs from Penrith during the previous vacancy should not be taken as precedent. Reply that Barton is to inform the Chancery why he took these things.

Note: Supposedly one of various petitions dating from 18 Edward II. It must date from after 20 June 1325, when Barton was ordered to deliver the temporalities to the new bishop, John de Ros (CPR 1324-7, p. 132), although he had previously been ordered to deliver them to William de Ayremynne, whose election was later quashed, on February 19 1325 (CPR 1324-7, p.92). The previous bishop, John Halton, died on 1 November 1324.

Summary: Notification that whereas the church of Burton Agnes was taxed at 50 marks for the church and 30 marks for the vicarage, beyond a pension, on 22 September 1327 the king ordered Archbishop Melton to survey all benefices wasted by the Scots, and that the priors of Warter and North Ferriby, Nova Villa and Duston found that the church was to be taxed at 35 marks and the vicarage, beyond the pension, at 20 marks.

Entry Type: Court Proceedings, Writ of certiorari
Summary: Writ of certiorari to Thorpe, seeking details of the case between the master of St Leonard's Hospital, York, and Peter Galeys, clerk, held before Bereford and his colleagues in 13 Edward II concerning a debt of 160 marks owed to Galeys, which has been summoned into Chancery. A transcript of the pleading is attached, held in Michaelmas term 13 Edward II, stating that Galeys sued the master for 160 marks, arrears of an annual rent of 40 marks, granted to him by Walter Reginald, the former master, on 5 March 1313, payable at Michaelmas in Bermondsey. He shows the grant deed, and an inspection and confirmation of the grant by the king. The master acknowledges the deed and debt, but says that Galeys brought the writ unjustly, as he was always ready to pay, and pays in court. Galeys cannot prove that the master refused, so amerced for false claim. At the quindene of Michaelmas 1320, Galeys and William de Byngham, for the master, appeared and Byngham paid Galeys the 40 marks for that Michaelmas.
