Summary: Copy of the final part of a certification, evidently from Archbishop Neville to the king, noting that convocation met on 22 (recte 21) January 1384 in the chapter house in York and the following day granted the king half a tenth, payable at the quindene of Easter next. Exceptions were given to Augustinian and Benedictine nuns. The priors of Malton and Lenton were appointed as collectors.

Note: Clearly says that convocation met on Thursday 22 January 1384, and the tax was granted on the following Friday. However, 22 January was a Friday, and the next Friday (29 January) was after the date of the letters, suggesting that 22 is an error for 21 January, the date noted in the archbishop's letter to the bishop of Durham (Bray, Records of Convocation, XIII, p. 212). The royal writ to Durham (op. cit., p. 213) refers to the tax being granted on 23 January, but presumably based on the present erroneous document. It seems likely that the days of the week are correct, and convocation met on Thursday 21 January, and granted the tax on Friday 22 January. Summary: Certification from Archbishop Neville, in response to a royal writ of 28 September 1384 (recited), stating that convocation met in York on 11 January 1385 and, after three days of deliberations, granted the king one tenth, payable at Pentecost and St Peter ad Vincula next. Exemptions included benefices and temporalities in Northumberland, Cumberland and Copeland devastated by Scottish incursions and English armies, Egglestone Abbey, whose goods had been burnt in a fire, and all Cluniac, Benedictine and Augustinian nuns, on account of their poverty. This was all on condition that the cost of repairing any damages done by the Scots in the meantime should be deducted from the tax. Further writs arrived on 15 January and 24 February 1385 (not recited), and convocation met again on Friday 21 April 1385, and granted another half a tenth, with the same exceptions, on condition that the king lead an army against the French or Scots before Martinmas next. The tax was payable within two months of such a campaign, and the collectors were the abbots of Kirkstall and Jervaulx, and the priors of Watton, Newburgh and Lenton.
