| Summary: | Fulmere asks that justice be done, stating that Archbishop Thoresby, in his petition to the council, showed how the vicar of Ecclesfield was previously presented by the abbot and convent of St Wandrille in Normandy. However, when Gwillelmy died, while the temporalities of St Wandrille were in the king's hands, one brother John Burdyt intruded into the church, without presentation or institution, and the archbishop asked the council for a remedy. The bishop of Winchester, then chancellor, presented Fulmere in the king's right, and he was in possession for sixteen months and more, until, on a false claim by Burdyt, proctor of the abbot of St Wandrille and farmer of Ecclesfield priory, that the vicarage was part of his farm, the chancellor repealed his presentation and presented Burdyt. Fulmere was also arrested and imprisoned for several days, and does not dare to pursue his right in the royal or church courts. |

| Note: | Bishop Wykeham, described as the former chancellor, left office on 24 March 1371. Archbishop Thoresby, who died on 6 November 1373, is described as 'archbishop', whereas the long-deceased Archbishop Greenfield is described as 'lately archbishop', implying that Thoresby was still alive. Burdet was deputed to Ecclesfield on 26 August 1369 (BIA Reg. 11, fol. 153v), and Fulmere was instituted on 29 October 1369 (Reg. 11, fol. 156r). Archbishop Thoresby ordered commissioners to proceed in the case between Fulmere and Burdet on 2 November 1370 (Reg. 11, fol. 163r), and on 30 June 1371 the archbishop ordered Burdet's institution (Reg. 11, fol. 163v). An order was issued on 30 October 1373 not to proceed in a plea before the King concerning the vicarage of Ecclesfield until a plea had been determined in the Bench between the King and the abbot of St Wandrille and Burdet concerning the right of patronage (CCR 1369-74, p. 594). |
