Summary: Mandate to the official of the archdeacon of York to make proclamation that those who wish to propound against John de Gaytford [Gateforth] are to appear in Southwell Minster on 1 July. John was previously tried for a crime at Ecclesfield (Eglesfeld) and then committed to the prison of Archbishop W. [William] de Grenefeld [Greenfield] at Ripon, where he had been detained for some time until the Scots, who had invaded in hostile manner, arrived at Ripon and broke the gaol there and forcibly abducted John, and who later asserted his innocence and wishes to purge himself of the crime, which would be to the prejudice of the prior of Ecclesfield; with mandate to certify his actions herein by letters patent; memoranda that these letters were sent to the dean of Doncaster to have the same proclamation made throughout the deanery and especially Ecclesfield; and that the commission for the purgation and the certification thereof, as well as testimonial letters for him, are registered in the second folio (three entries).
